Dear Little Mpho
Remember that day when you were telling your friends that you couldn’t wait to go to university so that you could finally choose what you wanted to study, and finally do what you love? Well university is really a place where one gets such a chance but it is hard work hey. To save yourself any disappointment when applying at Rhodes University make sure that your Grade 11 results are outstanding, just in case the June matric exams don’t turn out the way you hoped they would okay (there’s a big chance they won’t be that great).
When you get to matric make sure you go all out with your subjects as well as your social life, because there’s a big chance that you and your mates won’t be as close as you currently are after matric. The one thing you realise when you get to university is that no-one has time to run behind you nagging you to come to practice, the onus is on you to make the see that you are dedicated to the sport. There are societies and sports clubs you can join when you get to varsity, the membership fee is a once-off price (about R120) and the best part is that you don’t even have to go to any of the practices and no-one will reprimand you.
The other thing about these clubs is that there’s a social team and the official one, so depending on your laziness you can decide what you want join. Everyone’s favourite part about societies and clubs is the events they host; a lot of cheese n wine events, plays, concerts, marches, protests as well as a whole lot of parties. That’s one thing no-one ever told you about Rhodes, this place is full of alcoholics watch yourself so that you don’t become one as well.
Love you tons and Best of luck

This is well pretty good.To you my friend i say, this was a job well done. You are having the same understanding which is similar to mine when it comes to the issues of societies and partying. It might seem as a warm welcome that you are introduced to a hell lot of advertised weekly societies in the form of painted walls and posters. What people should bear in mind is that even though partying and books go hand in hand sometimes if it is overdone it leads to doom and catastrophies. There was a clear and a general overview of the fact that societies can make one enter into a moment of financial mismanagements.By Shadzo outtaurspace.blogspot.com
Hey Big Mpho
What you said about about the societies is actually true. You come here and you are expected to pop out money for societies that you wont even feature in. You go there being taken away by their t-shirts, the free food they offer you and the company the promise to offer.
I dont think it is a good thing that you pay money to be part of these societies then you end up not going and participating in them, it is a waste of money on my part. I don't see the use of having cheese and wines and not having anything to celebrate about that specific society because I think that the cheese and wine functions are for celebrating what the society does but you can only celebrate once you have engaged in their meetings and if you were involved in the activities.
In my opinion, you have to be skeptical about which of these societies you are going to sign up for.

Dear Old Mpho
What is wrong with a beer or two? I guess it is the levels we take the drinking to. I have to agree with that alcohol flows in this place. That is not the only aspect of your letter I relate to.
Your letter reminded me of the anxiety I was experiencing after I had sent in my application form to Rhodes University. The main concern was with the results which I seriously thought would betray me and ruin my chances of ever coming here, but heck! Look at where I am now.
The idea of free choice and starting a new life, away from your old friends at school really got to me at the beginning, but with sound advice and a sense of “positive” independence I am surviving my first year.
Settled first year.

Dear Mpho
Hi, I was in the same position as you, well, actually still am – both of us being at Rhodes University studying JMS1 which entails blogging. With the task of composing letters we both focused on societies.
Reading your letter, I realized how different we human beings view life! Although writing on the same aspect we have both chosen to focus on differing aspects. You take a positive approach while I adopted a critical angle. This meant that our tones were different, mine being skeptic and mocking. Because of these factors our conclusions were opposing each other, yours enticing the reader to participate while I provided caution.
Our forms are similar (I suppose we are being taught how to produce uniformed mass media). Your letter holds more personal emotions in the introductory paragraph which is advantageous as it builds up a relationship between you and your reader. I chose to abstain from this, allowing more words for the focus. This displays how decisions you make effects the rest of your letter… paralleling life!
Hope you have taken heed of your remark about alcoholics.
All the best for the rest of the blogging course.

Mpho spoke about societies in general and what’s expected of one at University as opposed to at school. My letter differed in that it went into detail, focusing on one aspect as can be seen on www.truthaboutlies101.blogspot.com. Mpho’s letter is appetizing for readers who just want a snippet of what’s on offer. The letter was interesting and told in a light-hearted way which blends in with their blog’s character but I felt a jump in the story from ‘not being as close with your friends after matric, to no one nagging you in University’. Here, there could have been a smoother transition to her main point about societies. Mpho like me pointed out the fun societies offer eager students straight from high school. However, my piece emphasized how the excitement of societies at University over-takes you till you get lost in five societies with no time for anything else. Her piece gave a precise overview of the same topic in an easy to read and enlightening letter.
